How to Have Joy and Peace in a Time of Chaos
In this message, discover how to experience lasting joy and peace even when life feels chaotic. Learn how the Holy Spirit develops these qualities in us and how following His leading allows us to become a source of hope and encouragement to others.
Joy and peace begin at the cross. Romans 15:8–13 reminds us that through Jesus, God has brought us into His family and given us a hope that circumstances cannot take away. Our culture often connects happiness and security to getting what we want, but God offers something deeper: contentment. As the message reminds us, “Contentment is a deep sense of security, satisfaction, and stability rooted in our relationship with God.”
The Holy Spirit is building God’s kingdom within us. Romans 14:17 describes that kingdom as righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. These qualities develop as we grow in Christ, even while facing difficulties. “Our circumstances don’t have to be settled for us to be settled internally.” Spiritual growth takes time, but God’s work produces lasting change.
The Holy Spirit produces the fruit, but we must fertilize the tree. Through prayer, Scripture, obedience, fellowship, and serving others, we cultivate lives where His fruit can grow. Jesus connects obedience with fullness of joy in John 15:10–11. The fruit we experience is also meant to carry seeds that bless others and help them encounter Jesus.
Galatians 5:22–25 provides the practical answer to living with joy and peace in a chaotic world: Live by the Spirit and follow the Spirit. As we follow His leading, He changes us, and what God produces in us becomes a blessing through us.
As you reflect on this message this week, consider the following:
- Joy and peace begin at the cross. We often look for contentment by trying to get our circumstances settled. What situations in your life are you allowing to determine whether you experience joy and peace? How can you begin rooting your security in what Jesus has already accomplished?
- The Holy Spirit is building God’s kingdom within us. Spiritual fruit takes time to develop, and experiencing fear, anxiety, or disappointment doesn’t mean God isn’t working in your life. Where can you recognize growth in how you respond to difficult circumstances? What might the Holy Spirit still be developing in you?
- The Holy Spirit produces the fruit, but we have to fertilize the tree. The fruit of the Spirit is meant to bless us and carry seeds that reach others. How are you cultivating an environment where the Holy Spirit can produce fruit in your life? Who around you could benefit from the peace and joy God is developing in you?
