The Enemy Among Us

Israel cried out because Midian was destroying its crops and devastating its land. Yet Baal’s altar still stood within Gideon’s own family and community. God called Gideon to confront this divided worship before fighting Midian. “Gideon’s first battle was not against Midian. It was against the divided hearts of Israel.”
Gideon obeyed at night because he feared his family and the town, but he still completed everything God commanded. “Scared obedience is still obedience.” When the town discovered the destroyed altar, its outrage revealed an allegiance its words might have denied. People may not recognize their idols until those idols are challenged. “You discover what people worship when you touch their idols.”
Gideon’s obedience began changing the people around him. His father stopped defending Baal, the town allowed Gideon to live, and his clan eventually gathered behind him. One act of obedience sparked a revival because one person became willing to follow God instead of the world.
Freedom requires more than blaming Midian while protecting Baal. God calls us to confront the money, power, fame, control, and approval we trust in his place. Tearing down a false altar is only part of deliverance. A new altar must be built through worship, surrender, and obedience. God can transform places of shame and bondage into testimonies of his deliverance, showing what the living God can do through one life yielded to him.
