The First Step of Faith
God is still speaking, and His people are already hearing His voice more often than they realize. The challenge is rarely whether God is speaking, but whether His people are listening and responding. Holy Spirit leads through Scripture, wise counsel, providential circumstances, spiritual gifts, and the inner witness that gently directs believers toward obedience. “God is still speaking and you are hearing him,” yet His guidance usually comes as a quiet nudge rather than a dramatic interruption. Learning to recognize that gentle leading is part of growing in spiritual maturity and walking closely with Christ.
Faith often begins with incomplete instructions rather than complete explanations. Philip was called away from a thriving revival in Samaria and told only to travel to a lonely desert road. He received no detailed plan, no promise of results, and no explanation. He simply obeyed. “Incomplete directions require complete obedience.” As Philip responded to each step, God revealed the next one. Divine guidance unfolded progressively, reminding believers that “we don’t hear the next direction until we follow the first.”
God prepares opportunities long before His servants recognize them. Philip did not create a divine appointment with the Ethiopian official. He arrived because he had faithfully followed Holy Spirit’s leading. Instead of announcing his own credentials, Philip approached with humility, asked questions, opened the Scriptures, and proclaimed Jesus. Holy Spirit continues to lead people to Scripture because Scripture leads people to Christ.
Obedience to God’s voice shapes far more than a single moment. Philip’s willingness to surrender comfort led him into a lifetime of fruitful ministry and eventually established him in Caesarea, where his family became known for faithfully serving God. The journey rarely follows the path people would choose for themselves, but Holy Spirit faithfully leads those who trust Him one step at a time. Simple daily practices of seeking God, obeying His promptings, and reflecting each evening on where His voice was followed cultivate hearts that become increasingly sensitive to His leading.
